Søndergade, established in the 1860s, first became a connecting point between the north and south parts of the city when Skt. Clemens Bridge was built in 1884. It linked the two neighborhoods with Ryesgade and Søndergade as a direct route to Aarhus Central Station, Store Torv, and the Cathedral. When the bridge opened, Søndergade, or Strøget, became the primary shopping street in Aarhus. In 1972, the street became a pedestrian zone and now attracts around 47,000 visitors every day with a selection of exciting shops, cafes, markets, and culture. The street stretches from Skt. Clemens Bridge to Sønder Allé.
