KØN - Gender Museum Denmark is located in Aarhus right by the Cathedral. KØN is one of the few museums of its kind in the world that focuses on gender culture and debates gender issues, equality, the body and sexuality at a professional museum level. The museum focuses on the importance of gender, both historically, currently and in the future. KØN started as a grassroots movement in the 1980s and was then called the Women's Museum.
In 1991, the museum was recognized by the state as a nationwide special museum with responsibility for women's cultural history in recent times. Part of the museum's collection deals with women's traditional lives, with a focus on housework and motherhood. Single women who rebelled, went their own way and chose new paths are also represented. The museum spreads over 1200m2 on 3 1/2 floors.
